    Les Échiquiers du Roi

    Our story

Vic-le-Comte — Our story first took root in Auvergne, France.

Les Échiquiers du Roi begins with a belief in what deserves our attention: the material, the craft, the beauty and the time we give to others.

Born around the game of chess, our Maison imagines objects to play with, display and keep. Their beauty goes beyond appearance: it can be felt in their touch, weight and proportions and the care given to every detail.

    A couple, a shared vision

Les Échiquiers du Roi grew from the meeting of two different paths, brought together by a shared vision: a love of beauty, creative freedom, craftsmanship and objects that stand the test of time.

“We care deeply about family, passing things on and cultural heritage. About the arts, reflection and intellectual curiosity. But also about something simpler: time spent together as an end in itself. These values shape our approach to chess: more than a game, an art of living.”
    Aurélien and Adèle

The material, the weight, the craft

Creating a beautiful object means observing, experimenting and starting again. Through this process, we refine the balance of every detail.

A detail from the Maison’s creative work
The material, the weight, the presence.
A detail of a handcrafted chess set
    The carving of a knight.
Wood, light and the character of a chess set
    Care in every element.

We have visited our partners’ workshops to understand every stage : selecting and drying the wood, carving the pieces, weighting, finishing and quality checks. Together, we refine the proportions, touch and balance of each creation.

The carving of a knight, the weight of a king, the grain of a board : every detail contributes to the experience of play. Some of our sets are triple-weighted, giving them stability and a satisfying feel in the hand that matches their proportions.

We also designed our Signature presentation box, because for us the art of gifting is an essential part of the experience.

    Designed to last

We want our sets to age beautifully.

It begins with the choice of woods, careful assembly and precise marquetry. We favour constructions made to stand the test of time and, depending on the woods and finishes, develop the patina of time.

This care continues after purchase: replacement pieces and guarantees, carefully selected care products and protective storage suited to our sets.

We are also working on a board take-back service, so a set can be cared for, restored and enjoyed long after its first owner.

    Designed to be individual

A beautiful object becomes precious when it tells a personal story, marks a milestone or recalls a moment shared.

Since 2026, our private commissions have opened the way to more personal creations: engraving, a choice of materials and bespoke projects.

Rare woods, inlay and distinctive finishes: we enjoy bringing together different artistic crafts around a creation imagined for a person, an occasion or a story.

    Service that continues

For us, the experience continues after a set leaves the workshop.

Advice before purchase, personalisation and laser engraving, preparation of special orders, checks, packing and dispatch from France : we give service the same attention as the object itself.

And when a customer returns years later for a replacement piece, care advice or a repair, we are still here.

    The spirit and the symbols

    A story in every detail

The king, the horse and the fleur-de-lis each express part of our vision.
