A month of preparation led to an intensive six-hour photo session. Moving boards and pieces from one scene to another is physical work, but these shared moments also bring the team together and spark new ideas.
Preparation
Developing the concept, planning the scenes and arranging the shoot.
The session
Setting up, adjusting the lighting and photographing the creations.
The team
A photographer, set designer, production manager, art director and hand model work together.
The photographer handles the technical aspects of the images. The set designer shapes the scene, the production manager coordinates the session and the art director guides the visual direction. A hand model brings the act of playing into the frame.
Our equipment includes a camera, a tripod, flash diffusers and a live-view setup for monitoring composition and focus.

Professional studios and outdoor locations offer different ways to reveal a set. We choose the surroundings to suit the scene and bring out the character of each creation.
03 / Capturing the detail
We look for the angle and light that convey the experience of seeing and handling our chess sets. The grain of the wood, the carving and the smallest details guide each image.
On set, you may hear us say “And… texture!”: a reminder to reveal the material as carefully as the action of the game.

04 / The finishing touch
We select the strongest photographs and refine the lighting and colour. Retouching aims to reflect the real appearance of the wood and the creations. Move the divider to see the original and finished images.
