    Dimensions & proportions

    For every interior,
    a chessboard

A board that feels at home. Pieces with room to move. A few guidelines to help you choose the right dimensions and create a set as pleasing to look at as it is to play.

    01 — A board in your interior

    Compare the sizes

The 45 × 45 cm Reliefs and 50 × 50 cm : two sizes, two profiles to picture in your home.

Before choosing, decide where you will display your set and measure the available surface. This will help you picture its size and proportions in the room.

For a gift, a set measuring around 40 × 40 cm works well in a smaller apartment. A spacious home can accommodate a 50 × 50 to 55 × 55 cm format that complements its proportions.

02 — Finding the right balance

The art of pairing pieces and board

Already have a board or a set of pieces? This table works both ways: the square size and the diameter of the king’s base will guide you.

Dimensions that work together — in centimetres
Square side lengthRecommended king base diameter
    3.5 cm2.5 to 3.0 cm
    4 cm2.8 to 3.4 cm
    4.5 cm3.2 to 3.9 cm
    5 cm3.5 to 4.3 cm
    5.5 cm3.9 to 4.7 cm
    6 cm4.2 to 5.1 cm

Aim for 70–85% of the square side length, adjusted to your taste. Values are rounded up to the nearest tenth.

    How to measure
    03 — Two essential measurements

    Measuring made simple

Rotate the king with your finger or mouse.

    The king’s base

Measure the diameter of the king’s base, from edge to edge through the centre. Measure the width of its base, rather than its height.

    Square side length

    Square size

Measure one side of a single square. Do not measure the diagonal or the full board width: the border is separate from the squares.
